Mechanosynthesis, also called mechanochemistry, is the use of mechanical devices to make covalent chemical reactions happen in programmable locations. For example, a single atom of silicon has been removed from a crystal by a scanning probe microscope and replaced in the same spot.

Mechanosynthesis has been proposed as a means of nanoscale manufacture: a nanoscale machine could in theory build a copy of itself simply by depositing atoms a few at a time.
